About
In 1895, a significant split occurred in the rugby world, leading to the creation of two distinct codes: Rugby Union and Rugby League. The divide was primarily due to disagreements over professionalism. The northern clubs, where players were mostly working-class, wanted to compensate players for time lost from work, leading to the formation of Rugby League, which allowed professional players. In contrast, Rugby Union remained an amateur sport until 1995, when it finally embraced professionalism.
